Electro Convulsive Shock Therapy for severe depression and catatonia–YES

So this is important stuff.  Since there are many who troll for opportunities to be anti psychiatry and since I think it important that we advocate for effective medical science here at Junk Science.com, I picked up this bounce from ACSH on the net today.

  1. Nice article. Thanks for posting, John. As a long-time ECT practitioner, I am in almost in total agreement with Drs. Kellner and Bark, although I do not put total blame for ECT’s political problems on the “Church” of $cientology. I have to give some blame to Michael Douglas’ skill as a film maker. “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” was a very fine movie and depicted the book extremely well–too well when it came to the scene in which McMurphy is taken for ECT, of course, against his will. In the book, it is not ECT but a lobotomy, but the movie holds true to McMurphy’s appearance after the procedure as depicted in the book. It was a great piece of film making, but totally misleading and the cause of a great deal of the ignorance that makes ECT so “controversial” in 2015, when it really should not be. The abuses ended half a century ago. ECT is the most effective and statistically safest treatment depression we have.
