When a theory or a hypothesis can always be twisted to explain contradictory evidence or a failure of evidence to support the theory, but the adherent finds an excuse or explanation in the theory–that’s a tautology.
A tautological thinker is always secure with an answer and may be wrong but never in doubt.
Darwinist evolutionary theory is a tautology, and so is the warming theory.
When an evolutionist runs into a randomness problem, or a fossil record problem or a mutational genetic, chemical rules selection problem, he invokes the answer of enough time and the dumb chemicals will get it right and create functional complexity.
When a warmer runs into a real world evidence problem that contradicts elegant and complex modeling–he invokes excuses (there are more than 50 proposed excuses for the pause) or he finds a new data set in the easily manipulated surface temp record–anything to overcome the problem of the contradictory evidence.
And after some scrambling and pounding the table and a loud “consensus” the theory of warming survives another evidentiary problem.
Lying for justice or lying for a theory is motivated by a political or ideological committment. The first casualty of ideology is scientific integrity if the issue is a scientific one, it’s the truth if it’s a political one.
In the case of evolutionists it’s the importance of a theory that is explained by materialism, in the case of warmers it is a theory that must prove that human habitation on the planet is causing harm and will destroy the planet.
If you know the ideological foundation of the theory, then manipulating the evidence or ignoring the evidence is easy–Eric Hoffer explains it in The True Believer.
There is no room for skepticism and questions in a mass movement of true believers. Skeptics always create uncertainty and True Believers want answers and security.
